AN ANSWER TO CHRISTOPHER’S QUESTION – ‘WHY DOESN’T ENGLAND WIN ANYMORE AT FOOTBALL?’

England invented football,
And England invented ‘fair play,’
And England invented ‘sportsmanship,’
But that’s all a long time away.

Now football in England is feeble
It has simply lost its way –
And we will never win again until
We recover the sport we used to play.

The lovely game is run by those
For the money and not the love
And they will abandon it after
Squeezing out all it can give.

They’ve created a monster with monster fans
Who boo and abuse opposing teams,
Insulting their teams, anthem and flag –
The sportsmen replaced by drunken screams.

They’ve put eleven players on the pitch
Each one a millionaire
Wearing drug ad symbols on their shirts
To show the young how much they care.

It’s become a market place, a bazaar, a fix
Where money reigns supreme.
The sport and fairness have been sacrificed
For the price put on the English team.

It’s a sad, sad tale, but things will chamnge
And the vision of England’s glory
Is still within striking range
When we get back to the original story.

THE ORIGINAL STORY

To set the cause above renown
To love the game beyond the prize,
To honour while you strike him down
The foe that comes with fearless eyes.
To count the cause of battle good
And dear the land that gave you birth,
And dearer yet the brotherhood
That binds the brave of all the earth.
