{"id":2037,"date":"2018-05-28T17:53:56","date_gmt":"2018-05-28T17:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/notablesoftheworld.com\/blog\/?p=2037"},"modified":"2018-06-27T06:26:27","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T06:26:27","slug":"ullswater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/notablesoftheworld.com\/blog\/ullswater\/","title":{"rendered":"ULLSWATER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We sit, side by side, in the Lady of the lake<br \/>\nAs she steams her way across the waters<br \/>\nUnruffled by the brisk breeze<br \/>\nThat springs up whenever clouds cover the sun.<br \/>\nOur position is sheltered, and the roll of the boat is calming<br \/>\nSo that a deep tranquility pervades our state of mind<br \/>\nLeaving us content as we let the past and future<br \/>\nMerge into the ever burgeoning present.<br \/>\nMinds adrift, senses relaxed and succumbed to passivity<br \/>\nWith the unaccustomed hills around us,<br \/>\nAnd the sloping sky lines above the dense woods<br \/>\nClustering at the water&#8217;s edge.<br \/>\nWe are close but wordless in our mutual contentment,<br \/>\nTwin souls who have walked the World together,<br \/>\nPaced it, side by side, across many foreign lands;<br \/>\nWho can tell us anything about ourselves?<br \/>\nWe can only live life in the knowledge<br \/>\nThat its purpose will forever be concealed from us.<br \/>\nWe live lives that test both the edge<br \/>\nOf the possible and the frontier of improvidence<br \/>\nSo that, as we try to describe what we think<br \/>\nIt is already slipping away to demonstrate<br \/>\nAnother aspect of itself.<br \/>\nBecause history is not a fixed thing,<br \/>\nIt is more variable than the future ever can be<br \/>\nUntil, that is, it becomes the changeable past.<br \/>\nThe uncovered sun is now warm on us<br \/>\nHaving cleared the shadows with a sweeping gesture<br \/>\nAcross the land-locked water and encircling hills,<br \/>\nSo that the small steamer butts her way<br \/>\nInto a silver, speckled galaxy of rippling light<br \/>\nAnd away on the bankside can be seen<br \/>\nA cornucopia of wild flowers.<\/p>\n<p>July 1998<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We sit, side by side, in the Lady of the lake As she steams her way across the waters Unruffled by the brisk breeze That springs up whenever clouds cover the sun.
