SMILING

My alter ego spoke in my young days
That all about me should bend to my will
And I knew how to laugh
But to smile was a weakness until

I met a smiler and started to grasp
That a smile shows strength of a different kind
A reaching out, not a subservient mask
So my unsmiling days I left behind.

It changed the way to the World I relate
And with it a maturity brought
So now I seek to accommodate
As I treasure that battle fought.

And treasure more that rare gift
That fortune brought to me
A course of life-change and uplift
From the girl who made me see.
