There are truths that are hard to teach
And lessons difficult to learn;
There are aims that lie within our reach
And sins for which we vainly burn.

Our place in wider creation
When humanity’s flow we join
Show salvation and damnation
Exist on each side of one coin.

What came before we cannot know,
And what comes next for us depends
Upon the way we sought to grow
And of the means to reach our ends.

Each birth comes with a destiny
That binds us to a chosen way;
With past and future set to be
The boundary sentinels of play.

And what hope is there here for us
Within these plans we do not make?
Whether we acquiesce or fuss
We have free choice to ease the ache.
